If you have a cat, it spends much of the day at the window. It settles on the ledge, watches the mynahs on the service yard railing, and studies the gap between frame and grille.

You tend to notice that gap only after something happens. Cat-proofing a flat is mostly about finding those gaps and covering them properly.

Why Cats Need Extra Protection at Home

Cats do not judge height the way people do. A cat will sit on a twelfth-storey ledge as calmly as it sits on a sofa arm.

NParks received 61 reports of cats and dogs falling from height between 1 September 2024 and 31 August 2025. Fifty-five of them were cats.

Under the Cat Management Framework, you must keep your cat in a safe environment and take reasonable steps to protect it from hazards. NParks names installing mesh, grilles, screens or other barriers as one of those steps. Licensing under the same framework closed on 31 August 2026. Keeping an unlicensed pet cat has been an offence since 1 September 2026.

In Singapore the risk is shaped by how we live. Flats are high, windows are wide, and cross ventilation keeps panels open all day. Supervision helps, but it is not a barrier.

How to Check Your Windows for Escape Gaps

Walk your flat slowly, at cat height, with the windows in their usual open position. You are looking for narrow, forgettable spaces a cat can fold through.

Common gap points to inspect

  • The slot between a sliding panel and the frame when half open
  • The open corner of a top hung or casement window at full swing
  • Gaps between window grilles
  • Balcony railings and open corridors

A cat fits through a much smaller space than you would expect. If you are unsure about a particular gap, have it checked during a site visit rather than guessing.

Why Window Grilles May Still Be Risky

Grilles were designed to stop people entering, not animals leaving. A determined cat can squeeze through the gaps between the bars. Truly cat-safe window grilles need the whole plane covered.

If you already have grilles installed, covering the grille face with mesh is the practical route, as pet-friendly screens can be fitted to windows with metal or invisible grilles.

Cat-Proofing HDB Gates and Doors

The metal gate is the busiest opening in a flat. It is opened for deliveries and neighbours, and often left ajar while the main door stays open for air. A cat can slip out here just as easily as from a window.

Entry points worth securing

  • The front gate and main entrance.
  • Balcony
  • Backyards
  • Any doors leading outdoors

Cat door mesh typically comes in two types of systems. A retractable door screen where the mesh can be rolled out and kept away is used to cover main doors, gates and outdoor balcony areas. A sliding door screen suits glass doors, balconies and main entrances.

How Mesh Window Guards Are a Safety Layer

Mesh window guards combine durable mesh with secure locks to add a layer of protection around open windows. The mesh is designed to resist tears and scratches and to take the force and weight of a cat. Lock options hold the panels firmly in place, helping prevent them from being pushed or slid open accidentally. Together, these features create a secure barrier while allowing fresh air to circulate through your home throughout the day.

Choosing Cat-Safe Mesh for Your Home

Mozziefy’s cat-friendly screens come in 316 Stainless Steel and heavy-duty polyester. Fibreglass insect mesh and magnetic screens are not cat-safe. Magnets cannot take weight, so a cat can push through.

What to look for

  • Sliding Cat Mesh – in 316 Stainless Steel or heavy-duty polyester, gliding sideways on a slim track, good for openings you use often. Lock option available.
  • Swing Cat Mesh – 316 Stainless Steel.
  • Retractable Cat Mesh – heavy-duty polyester on a roller, tear-resistant.
  • Frames fixed to the window, grille or gate, never taped loosely

A proper cat-proof screen is designed with stronger, more durable mesh that can withstand the pressure, scratching and climbing of a cat. This material strength is what separates ordinary netting from a reliable cat proof window barrier.

When to Get a Custom Mesh Recommendation

Few flats are identical, so Mozziefy offers a free on-site measurement with no commitment until the final quotation. Every screen is handcrafted to exact dimensions.

Pricing is per square foot with a minimum price per mesh, plus 9% GST.

Tell the team up front if you have a kitten, a determined climber, or an unusual grille layout, because it changes which system gets recommended. Choosing correctly the first time costs less than replacing torn netting twice.
